Rali Cwm Gwendraeth was the first event to kick the season for 2017 held at Pembrey Race Circuit in Carmarthenshire. With the rain pouring down all week, the heavens above seemed to stop on that day, giving us a cold & foggy start but turned out to be a nice sunny day by lunch time although it was still cold. Familiar faces & vehicles were in attendance to kick off the new season.
Part of the J D Tyres Welsh Tarmacadam Rally Championship Calendar, the eventual winner was Bob Fowden & Paul Fowden driving their Subaru Impreza to victory with almost a minute to spare. Other awards on the day were handed to again the already mentioned Fowden duo for the Morswyn and Anita Williams Perpetual Trophy & Award. The Ricky Nelson Memorial Award was handed to Chris Hand & Dorian Jones whilst throwing their ford Escort around the track.
A well organised event, it was a good day in general. However something that was mentioned a lot was the lack of viewing for the spectators. This year for the first race, the viewing area was restricted to around the paddock area & the bank as you walk your way to the paddock. Most of the action is on the far side of the track however this cannot be viewed from the areas that were allocated. Whilst it is understandable that safety comes first, and quite right too after the recent tragic accidents, but it has got to a point where safety is now, i fear, going to drive those supporters away.
I hope something can be done to improve the opportunities for viewing areas at least for the future of these events.
